Wildcat Beach never gets old!
April 25 - 27, 2014
Wildcat: The best go-to resort when you need to get outdoors and weather limits your options.
Erik, Lynda, Mark and Coral decided to go for it - a weekend backpacking trip to Wildcat Beach after analyzing all the weather reports as a
storm was heading in. We determined if we got our tents up before any rain, we would be safe as the Saturday weather report was clear. We weren't expecting showers until late Friday afternoon, so we began our hike at Bear Valley Trailhead with hopes of beating the rain. After about .5 miles on the trail, the rain started. We quickly slipped on our rain jackets and continued our hike as the rain poured down on us. It poured and poured and we kept hiking. Finally, we stopped under a tree and re-evaluated our choices. Unanimously, we all decided to head back to the car! It would be almost impossible to set up our tents in the rain. As soon as we made it to the car, the rain stopped!! We drove to Limantour Beach and spent some time at the beach wondering if the storm would return. We headed out for Mexican food and found a nice hotel for the night. We got an early start Saturday morning for "take 2" on the trail and made it to Wildcat with good weather. The wildflowers were amazing as clusters paved our paths throughout the trails. The day was spent walking along the beach to Alamere Falls and enjoying the sunshine. We were so lucky with the Saturday weather, no wind and plenty of sun! We enjoyed appetizers, wine and a wonderful beach fire. Late Saturday night, the rain returned and continued with a steady light rain for most of the night. As we woke Sunday morning, the rain had stopped. Lynda woke up last as we greeted her with a Birthday Celebration song! We hung out Sunday morning before heading out around noon. Our weekend sightings were a bobcat, two whales, quail, deer, and of course turkey vultures. We enjoyed an early dinner at the HopMonk Tavern before heading home. It was a bit tough hiking in and out without a day of rest! Total Miles Traveled: 18.2
