DONNER SUMMIT TO SQUAW VALLEY
VIA THE PACIFIC CREST TRAIL 18.2 MILES
October 19
Anna and Coral decided to take the challenge of hiking from Donner Summit to Squaw Valley on the Pacific Crest Trail. Carey decided to start at Squaw Valley after work and hike up the trail to meet us. The trail was in outstanding condition and the weather was fantastic. The trail starts out with a climb and then flattens out. The climbing continues again and then would level off after a bit, so we could catch our breath. After about 8 miles in, we stopped for lunch and enjoyed tuna sandwiches. Wouldn't you know it, Anna pulls out a cold beer! After about a 20 minutes rest, we got back on our feet and continued the journey. Just before hitting Tinker Knob, we hiked through a strong wind. As we were on top of the crest heading toward Tinker Knob, the wind was so strong, Anna lost her hat a few times and the wind would literally move our legs as we took steps. The scenery and fall colors were stunning. No wildlife to be seen and we were the only hikers on the PCT. After several hours, we saw Carey as he had just finished the climb up from Squaw Valley. We began our decent down on the Granite Chief Trail. We hit the parking lot and quickly threw off our boots knowing it was time for a celebration! We enjoyed appetizers and beverages at the Auld Dubliner Irish Pub in Squaw Valley.
